Remember how your car looked the day you drove it home? Deep gloss, water beading off the hood, paint so clean it almost looked wet. For most cars, that look fades within a year or two. Road salt, bird droppings, tree sap, UV, and a few hundred trips through the car wash slowly dull the finish until it looks tired.
A professional ceramic coating is the best way we know to stop that from happening. At PWP Detailing in Mentor, we install System X ceramic coatings on everything from daily drivers to weekend toys, and we recommend it to almost every customer who plans to keep their car for a few years. With another Ohio winter on the way, here's why.

What a ceramic coating actually is
A ceramic coating is a liquid, silica-based (SiO2) protectant that bonds chemically to your car's factory clear coat and cures into a hard, glass-like layer. Think of it as a second, tougher clear coat on top of the one your car came with.
Unlike wax or spray sealants, which sit on the surface and wash away in weeks or months, a professional coating becomes part of the surface and lasts for years. That layer is:
- Harder than your clear coat, so it resists light marring and wash swirls
- Hydrophobic, so water, mud, and grime bead up and slide off instead of sticking
- Chemically resistant, so bird droppings, bug guts, sap, and road salt have a harder time etching the paint
- UV resistant, which helps prevent fading and oxidation
- Glossier, giving the paint that deep, just-detailed look every time it's clean
Why it matters even more in Northeast Ohio
Cars in Lake County have it rough. From November to March, our roads are coated in salt and brine that cling to paint, wheels, and lower panels. Lake-effect snow means more trips through the car wash, and every pass with a dirty brush adds swirls. Summer brings its own problems: bugs on the front end, sap and droppings from parking under trees, and strong UV on long sunny days.
A coated car handles all of it better. Salt and slush rinse off more easily instead of baking onto the paint. Bugs and droppings release with a gentle wash instead of hard scrubbing. And because the surface stays slick, your car simply stays cleaner between washes, which means less time with a bucket in your driveway in January.
Why we chose System X
There are dozens of coating brands out there, and plenty of them are sold in a bottle at the auto parts store. We chose System X because it's a professional-only system built for trained automotive installers.
System X is made in the USA by Element 119, a Connecticut company founded in 2010. Its automotive coatings are engineered to stand up to road salt, UV, and harsh weather, which makes them a great fit for Ohio winters.
A few more reasons we trust it:
- Professionally installed only. Top-tier System X coatings are applied by trained installers, not sold off the shelf, so you get the product and the prep done right. PWP Detailing is a certified System X installer.
- Real warranties. System X backs its coatings with manufacturer warranties, and coatings can be registered with CARFAX, which adds to your vehicle's service history when it's time to sell.
- A coating for every goal and budget. We match the coating to how you use your car:
- Phantom: System X's most advanced two-part coating, for maximum long-term protection
- Max G+: Show-car gloss and durability on paint, wraps, or PPF
- Max MF: Made for matte and satin finishes, protecting them without adding shine
- Pro: Ultra-slick, high-gloss protection that keeps paint easy to clean
- Crystal+: Great for daily drivers, backed by a 2-year warranty
- Renew: Our most affordable coating, a quick way to add real ceramic gloss and protection
System X also makes dedicated coatings for glass, wheels, interior leather and plastics, and fabric, so we can protect the whole car, not just the paint.
What a coating won't do (and what will)
We'd rather you hear this from us than find out later: a ceramic coating is not armor. It won't stop rock chips, deep scratches, door dings, or keying. Anyone promising that is overselling.
If you want protection from chips and scratches, that's what paint protection film (PPF) is for. Many of our customers put PPF on the high-impact areas like the front bumper, hood, and mirrors, then ceramic coat the whole car, including over the film. You get physical impact protection where you need it most and easy-clean gloss everywhere else. We install both, so we can help you decide what makes sense for your car and budget.
Is ceramic coating worth the money?
For most people who plan to keep their car a few years, yes. A professional coating costs more up front than a wax, but look at what you get over the life of the coating:
- No more waxing. Wax lasts weeks to a few months. A coating lasts years, so you skip dozens of wax sessions or paid wax services.
- Faster, easier washes. Dirt releases with less effort, so washing takes less time and less scrubbing, which means fewer swirl marks.
- Better resale value. Paint that still looks new sells faster and for more. A CARFAX-registered coating shows the next buyer the car was cared for.
- The look you paid for. The biggest payoff is simple: your car keeps looking the way it did when you bought it.
If you're buying a new car, the best time to coat it is right away, before the paint picks up swirls and contamination. If your car is a few years old, that's fine too; we correct the paint first so the coating locks in a like-new finish.
What to expect at PWP Detailing
A coating is only as good as the prep underneath it. Whatever is on the paint when the coating goes on gets sealed in for years, so we don't cut corners on this part.
- Consultation. We look at your car, talk about how you drive and park it, and recommend the right System X coating for your goals and budget.
- Decontamination wash. A thorough hand wash, iron removal, and clay treatment to strip away bonded contaminants.
- Paint correction. We polish out swirls, light scratches, and haze so the paint looks its best before it's locked in.
- Surface prep. A panel wipe removes polishing oils so the coating can bond directly to the clear coat.
- Coating application. System X is applied panel by panel in a controlled indoor environment, then leveled and inspected under proper lighting.
- Curing and final inspection. The coating cures before your car goes home, and we walk you through how to care for it.
Keeping your coating at its best
Coated cars are easy to care for, but not maintenance-free. A few simple habits keep the coating performing for its full life:
- Hand wash with a pH-neutral soap and clean microfiber, or use a touchless wash in winter
- Avoid automatic brush washes, which can still scratch through any coating
- Rinse off salt, bugs, and droppings promptly instead of letting them sit
- Come back for your annual inspection, which keeps your warranty in good standing
